Malaysia's world champion mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei moved on to the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Masters 2026. Their latest victory came against Indonesia's Amri Syahnawi and Nita Violina Marwah on May 21.
In the postgame discussions, Ee Wei expressed her feelings at their win.
"I'm happy because we didn't give up in the second game, even though they were leading," she said. "I also thank the Malaysian fans who support us."
They won 21-19, 22-20 in a 47-minute match at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil. The Malaysian pair took control in the opening game. The Indonesians made a strong comeback in the second and pushed it till 20-17.
However, Tang Jie and Ee Wei both scored five consecutive points to win with 22-20, even with the immense amount of pressure on them.
Tang Jie admitted that they expected a difficult match when they were set against the world No.16 Indonesian pair.
"They are definitely not easy opponents because they are also among the top players in the world," he said. "Before the match, Ee Wei and I already discussed our tactics carefully."
Ee Wei explained how they stayed focused even while they were trailing behind in the second game.
“We never thought about going into a rubber game; we only focused on breaking their rhythm and finding solutions point by point," the player said. "Our coaches always reminded us to show character on court and never give up easily.”
The pair is competing at the Malaysia Masters together for the first time since 2024 after briefly splitting last year.
There was a lot of pressure on them for playing in their home country, but their resilience against the Indonesians showed why they are among the world's elite mixed doubles pairs.
Quarterfinal Challenge Awaits Against Chinese Duo
The Malaysian duo will be next to face China’s shuttlers Gao Jia Xuan and Wei Ya Xin for a spot in the semifinals. The Chinese pair reached the quarterfinals after defeating Indonesia's Dejan Ferdinansyah and Bernadine Anindya Wardana in straight games.
Tang Jie and Ee Wei have both been in solid form on the circuit for a while, even if they’re playing together after a short break.
Although the mixed doubles semifinals are yet to be finalised, the quarterfinals are still going on. The Malaysian pair, if they win, will play against the winner of the quarterfinal between Taiwan’s Wu Guan-xun and Lee Chia-hsin and Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Bøje in the semifinals.
Other players who are still in the tournament are Thailand’s Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai, alongside China’s Guo Xinwa and Chen Fanghui.
