Soh Wooi Yik Ends Key Speculation From His Social Media Activities After Lee Chong Wei’s Statement

A simple Instagram bio change by Soh Wooi Yik has sparked major speculation. While fans wonder if he's leaving the national team, the Malaysian badminton star has finally broken his silence.
Soh Wooi Yik addressed the speculation in a recent interview with NST, confirming he has no intention to leave BAM. It all started when Wooi Yik updated his Instagram bio to “pro badminton player”, sparking speculation over whether he intends to leave the national body.
"I feel there's nothing to answer there. That social media is my private space," said Wooi Yik after a training session.
This speculation aligns with a growing trend of players going independent or splitting from their partners. It includes top players like Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani from the national team in October 2024.
"I didn't have any specific intentions. It's not what people are saying. I just did what I felt like doing myself." Yik said.
Lee Chong Wei’s Statement On The Growing Rumours
BAM performance committee chairman Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei has made it clear that he believes there’s nothing to worry about the players' social media updates. He feels that the former world No. 2 changed his bio just to present himself as a professional athlete, rather than hinting at going independent.
“For me, there is really nothing in it. Every country has a different culture, so when Wooi Yik puts ‘pro badminton player’ in his Instagram bio, many assume he is leaving the national team," he continued.
“But in my view, he is simply stating that he is a professional player because this is his career, just like other athletes around the world…I understand that men’s doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi has already confirmed that nothing is going on.”
Shortly after this statement from Chong Wei, Wooi Yek denied the rumors of leaving the committee.
