The Badminton World Federation approved the 3×15 scoring system at the Annual General Meeting. China’s men’s singles star and current World No. 1 Shi Yuqi voiced his opinion on the new system.

When asked about his thoughts on the new system, the World No. 1 said, "Approach it with a positive attitude, adapt to it, don't make it adapt to you."

"Shorter matches may not demand as much physical exertion…” he said. But at the same time, the opponent's attacking power, especially younger opponents, will be stronger," added Shi Yuqi.

X-User Zee (@zhiyiilyy)posted the interview clip on April 26. However, he also said that the new system is challenging in more ways than one.

"The 15-point system is actually much harder to manage tactically because the match time is compressed," he said on Tuesday as per The Star.

Shi Yuqi also explained why shorter matches leave even less space for errors. "And if you’re trailing, the margin for error is much smaller, and there is less opportunity to mount a comeback," he added, the 2025 BWF World Champion.

The Updated Scoring System by the BWF

Under this new 3X15 point system introduced by the BWF, which replaced the 3x21 system. This is the first major rule change for the tournament in about 20 years.

This big change was made to make the games more television-friendly, with shorter matches and higher stakes, making it more engaging.

It was also introduced to reduce player fatigue. Under this new system, each game will now contain 15 points instead of 21. The players will change courts once one of them reaches 8 points.

This rule will apply from 4 January 2027 to all major tournaments like the Thomas & Uber Cup, World Tour tournaments, and World Championships.

Meanwhile, Shi Yuki suffered a setback at this year's Thomas Cup. He had to give his Canadian opponent, Victor Lai, a walkover due to illness in the first round.
