Indian doubles shuttler Satwiksairaj Rankireddy clarified the discussion surrounding his earlier comments about the lack of recognition for India’s bronze medal win at the 2026 Thomas Cup in Horsens, Denmark.

He sought to explain his intention behind those remarks, which had attracted significant attention from badminton fans.

India secured a bronze medal during its 2026 Thomas Cup campaign, with Satwiksairaj and his partner Chirag Shetty playing a major role in the squad’s success. After the tournament, the pair expressed disappointment over the lack of recognition for their achievement.

While explaining his intent, Satwik said, “My message was simple: we need to foster a culture that encourages and celebrates every win, big or small.”

“Whether it is a World Cup medal or a podium finish in a global championship like the Thomas Cup, these moments represent years of sacrifice and hard work," he added.

“When such milestones are met with silence, it feels disheartening not just for us, but for the future generations of Indian athletes who are watching,” he further added.

He also stated that he does not “want money or grand parades; we just want to know that our country is watching and that our efforts are seen.”

Satwik’s Earlier Remarks After the Thomas Cup Campaign

Previously, when Satwik spoke about his disappointment in an interview with The Indian Express, he said, “I wouldn’t want my kid to play badminton,” while discussing the challenges shuttlers face despite achieving major results.

Satwik is one of the leading doubles players, along with his partner Chirag Shetty. The pair previously became the first Indian men’s doubles duo to achieve the World No. 1 ranking on the BWF circuit and have won multiple titles for India.

At the 2026 Thomas Cup, Satwik and Chirag both played a huge role in India’s bronze-medal finish. Together, they secured important wins throughout the event, including India’s group-stage victory against Canada.

They also recorded a significant win in the quarterfinals against Chinese Taipei’s Wang Chi-lin and Chiu Hsiang-chieh in a long three-game battle, helping India secure a 3-0 victory and confirm its bronze medal.

Speaking earlier about the Indian squad’s return home after the event, Satwik had recalled, “Nobody even asked us who we are, what medals we have won.”

“Here we are fighting to win, and if we get injured, there’s no replacement for us. We play without support and under immense pressure in team events. But even a title was not enough last time. Again this time.”

Satwik also added, “I told Prannoy I’ll not let my kid play badminton. If you are strong mentally, you’ll manage, but otherwise it’s really tough to keep going on like this.”

“Frankly, at the Hyderabad academy, we were felicitated, and that small bouquet and cake cutting was enough. We don’t expect anything grand.”
