PV Sindhu has taken on a senior governance role in badminton. She has been made a voting member of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Council as a currently active player. The move gives her direct participation in the BWF Council's decision-making and gives players a voice from within.

Sindhu officially became a member of the BWF Council after the required vetting process was completed. She was elected to the BWF Athletes’ Commission as its chair in December. Her term began with her first formal appearance before the community at the Annual General Meeting on 25 April.

“It is a true honor and privilege to take on this responsibility within the Badminton World Federation and to represent the voices of athletes from around the world,” Outlook reported Sindhu saying. “Badminton has given me so much, and I feel deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the sport in this capacity.”

Her appointment is an exception. A full voting position on badminton’s highest governance body remains rare for an active player. Sindhu will now be part of important decisions and discussions that will shape the sport's future globally.

The strategic direction, policies, and governance of the sport are the responsibility of the BWF Council. Having Sindhu in the room means that the athletes’ voices and concerns will be represented directly at the highest level.

PV Sindhu's Role in BWF Athlete Representation

The duality of Sindhu’s role as an elite athlete and decision-maker adds a new dimension to the governance of badminton. She provides current, on-court insight into discussions that often determine rules, structures, and player welfare.

BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul spoke of her contribution to the sport and her ability to represent athletes.

"Over many years, P. V. Sindhu has demonstrated exceptional skill, grace and spirit on the court, and it is wonderful to now have such an outstanding role model representing the voice of our athletes."

Sindhu’s elevation is a sign of increasing confidence in athlete-led leadership. Her ability to balance competition and strengthen the relationship between players and administrators.
