Malaysian badminton stars Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin are making waves as the world's No. 7-ranked men’s doubles pair. While their on-court training pushes them to win titles, their ultimate secret to sustained success actually lies away from the badminton court.
The pair places immense focus on a highly disciplined, holistic approach to their daily health, wellness, and mental recovery to stay ahead of their competition.
Sze Fei emphasizes that true wellness requires constant small habits. "It's the small things you do every day that matter," he said. "How you sleep, eat, recover, and take care of yourself physically and mentally. When you do those things consistently, you feel better, perform better and enjoy life more."
Maintaining consistency is exactly what separates good players from world-class champions on the tour. The grueling BWF World Tour schedule can easily lead to physical burnout if a player neglects self-care.
Sze Fei believes that finding a way to completely disconnect from the sport is vital for long-term athletic survival.
"Away from the court, it's really about balance," Sze Fei explained. "People think athletes only focus on performance, but recovery is equally important. You need proper rest, enough energy, and time to reset mentally, too."
By prioritizing rest alongside rigorous training, the pair successfully protects both their minds and bodies. And this has given them a chance to finish on the podium thrice this year.
Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin’s Impressive 2026
Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin started the calendar year with two quarter-final defeats in the Malaysia Open and India Open.
However, they made a quick comeback to win the Indonesia Masters by beating the Indonesian pair Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin 21-19, 21-13 in the final.
In the German Open, they faced a tough semi-final defeat and did not have a great England Open or Badminton Asia Championships, either.
But, just like any great athlete, they turned things around again. They finished third in the Thailand Open and then backed it up with a runner-up finish in the Malaysia Masters 2026.
After a quarter-final finish in the Singapore Badminton Open, they have now again reached the final eight of the ongoing Indonesia Open 2026.
In the quarter-final, they will face the Indian pair of Hariharan Amsakarunan and M.R. Arjun on Friday, June 5th.
