Not everyone is seeing the BWF's decision to approve the 15x3 scoring system through the same lens. While World No. 1, China's Shi Yuqi, spoke about adapting to the system, a former Indian coach didn't agree with the new policy.

“Extremely disappointed with the Badminton World Federation (BWF) decision to alter the scoring system, and even more concerning is the overwhelming support it has received from Council members,” said former coach Vimal Kumar.

While the BWF's logic behind the move was to make matches shorter and more compelling for viewers, Kumar argued it would do the opposite.

“It’s disheartening to see a sport followed so passionately, especially across Asia, being reshaped for reasons that do not address its real challenges…This is not evolution. This is dilution,“ the former Chief National Coach of India claimed on April 26.

Even those who are more open-minded to the changes have been reluctant. On Tuesday, Shi Yuqi claimed that shorter games will favor younger players and will make it harder for those who fall behind early in the match to make a comeback.

What's the New 3x15 Scoring System?

The BWF introduced a new 3x15 point system, replacing the 3x21 system. This is the first major rule change for the tournament in about 20 years.

This big change was made to make the games more television-friendly, where matches become shorter and more interesting to watch because of the importance of each point.

It was also introduced to reduce player fatigue. Under this new system, each game will contain 15 points instead of 21. If the score reaches up to 14-14, it continues until one player reaches the lead by at least one point.

And the deuce can only go up to 21 points. The players will change the court when one player reaches 8 points.

This rule will be applicable from 4 January 2027 to all major tournaments like the Thomas & Uber Cup, World Tour tournaments, and World Championships.
