Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran pulled out of the mixed doubles final at the Badminton Asia Championships 2026 as the former suffered an injury prior to the game.
This meant the South Korean pair of Kim Jae-Hyeon and Jang Hye-Jeong would be crowned champions.
The decision was announced just before the final, and this meant the South Korean pair would win the championship without even getting on the court.
Fans and players were both very upset by the news. Dechapol and Supissara had built up a lot of momentum by playing well in the weeks leading up to the final. They got to the stage by beating China's Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping 21-19, 18-21, and 22-20 in the semis.
Officials from the tournament confirmed the withdrawal, saying that injury was the only reason. There were no more details right away, but the Thai pair's main goal now is to get better.
The win is still a big result for Kim and Jang. They made it to the final by winning tough draws, and even though they were not able to play the final due to the unfortunate injury to one of their opponent, their run until that point was brilliant.
Despite having to bow out even before the final, the Thai pair had a stellar run to get there, which is promising.
Strong Run to Final Showed the Growing Promise of Dechaphol and Supissara
Before they dropped out, Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran had done well in the Badminton Asia Championships 2026.
They were able to use their experience and energy well together. Dechapol's control at the net worked well with Supissara's speed and attacking instincts from the backcourt. They both did well under pressure and beat tough opponents to get to the final.
Their run showed how their chemistry as a couple was growing. They were one of the most exciting teams in the draw because of their mutual understanding and decision-making abilities.
Having beaten the World No. 1 pair, things were expected to be easy for them in the final, as the opponents were ranked way below them. However, fate had other plans for them, and even though they are disappointed with how things ended, their journey to get to the final is something they can definitely build on.
