Akane Yamaguchi just hit a huge milestone. As of May 28, 2026, the Japanese badminton star has spent 500 weeks in the BWF women's singles world top 5. That works out to 9 years and 79 days at the top of the sport.

Only two players have ever done it for longer. Taiwan's Tai Tzu Ying leads the list with 9 years and 239 days. Spain's Carolina Marín sits second with 9 years and 225 days.

Yamaguchi also ranks third all-time for most weeks in the world top 10. That kind of consistency in badminton is rare. It speaks to her drive and her ability to stay healthy at the top level.

Her 2026 season has been strong, even with just one title to show for it. She holds a record of 16 wins and 4 losses. She keeps reaching the deep stages of every major tournament she enters.

The big highlight came at the Thailand Open. Yamaguchi captured her first BWF World Tour title of the year. She beat PV Sindhu in the quarter-finals and then crushed world No. 2 Chen Yu Fei 21-14, 21-18 in the final.

She also picked up a bronze medal at the Badminton Asia Championships. A tough three-game win over Gao Fangjie got her into the semi-finals. She fell just short to China's Wang Zhiyi in a close match.

The All England Open saw her reach the semi-finals too. She beat Busanan Ongbamrungphan and Chiu Pin-Chian on her way before losing to Wang Zhiyi again. Her year started a bit rough, though, as she had to withdraw from the Malaysia Open quarter-final against Sindhu due to a minor injury.

What Is Next for Akane

Yamaguchi is not slowing down anytime soon. Right now, she is in the middle of a strong run at the KFF Singapore Badminton Open 2026. So far, she has been close to flawless.

She beat local favorite Yeo Jia Min in the round of 32. Then she overwhelmed Michelle Li 21-14, 21-6 to storm into the quarter-finals. She has barely dropped a beat.

Her next test in Singapore is a tough one. She will face Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon, the world No. 7, in the quarter-final. It is the kind of match that could decide her week.

After Singapore, the focus shifts to Indonesia. Yamaguchi is set to face China's Huang Yu-Hsun, the world No. 14, at the POLYTRON Indonesia Open 2026 in June. Another big chance to add to her title count.

If she keeps playing like this, more silverware could be just around the corner. The 9-year milestone is special. But Yamaguchi looks far from done.
