Badminton Indonesia Pays Tribute to Gregoria Mariska Tunjung After Her Pelatnas Withdrawal

Gregoria Mariska Tunjung

Indonesian women's singles star Gregoria Mariska Tunjung has officially stepped away from the PBSI National Training Center in Cipayung. She submitted her resignation on Friday, May 15, ending a 12-year journey with the national team. Her decision comes as she continues to battle vertigo, a health issue that has kept her off the court for months.

Badminton Indonesia took to Twitter to share a heartfelt farewell to one of their brightest stars. "Thank you for your dedication and struggles for the Red and White, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung," the post read. The federation praised her hard work, fighting spirit, and commitment over more than a decade.

The tweet went on to acknowledge the difficult choice she had to make. "The PBSI Association respects Gregoria's decision to step down from the National Training Center to focus on her health recovery process," the post continued. It ended with warm wishes: "May Gregoria recover fully soon and continue to achieve the best things in the future."

Gregoria personally informed PP PBSI Head of Athlete Development Eng Hian and women's singles head coach Imam Tohari about her decision. "Gregoria is an athlete who has contributed greatly and brought pride to Indonesia," Eng Hian said. "We respect the decision she has made and wish her all the best for her health and future."

PBSI also explained that her health was the main reason behind the resignation. "Up to now, Gregoria feels that she has not fully recovered and does not yet have the confidence to return to competition," the federation said in its official statement. They added that her dedication and professionalism have inspired the younger generation of Indonesian athletes.

Her recent absence had already raised concern among fans. Vertigo had forced her to pull out of major events, including the 2025 Sudirman Cup, the China Masters, and the Korea Open. The frequent headaches and nausea made it impossible for her to compete at her usual level.

Gregoria's Achievements With the Indonesian Badminton Association

Gregoria joined the national team in 2013. She started her career at PB Mutiara Cardinal in Bandung. Her first big moment came in 2017, when she won the World Junior Championships girls' singles title. She was the first Indonesian to do so in 25 years.

In 2022, she captained the Indonesian women's team to gold at the Asia Team Championships. They beat South Korea in the final. Later that year, she became the first Indonesian women's singles player to qualify for the BWF World Tour Finals. She even beat Olympic champion Chen Yufei in the group stage.

The year 2023 was a special one for her. She won the Spain Masters and broke into the world's top 10. No Indonesian woman had done that since Maria Kristin Yulianti back in 2008. She also won the Kumamoto Masters by beating Chen Yufei again in the final.

Her biggest moment came at the Paris 2024 Olympics. She won the bronze medal, the highlight of her career. She also helped Indonesia reach the Uber Cup final for the first time since 2008. In 2025, she played her fifth SEA Games and won silver with the team.
