Badminton Fans Spot Major Flaw in Watanabe–Taguchi Duo

Apr 16, 2026, 4:08 PM CUT

The partnership between Yuta Watanabe and Maya Taguchi is getting more and more attention on the international circuit, but fans think that a major tactical flaw is keeping them from being as effective against top-tier opponents.

The pair crashed out in the semi-final of the Asian Badminton Championships, and that has led people to talk about their strategy.

Their strange structure is at the center of the debate. Taguchi often takes charge of the backcourt, attacking and starting rallies, while Watanabe controls the front with his trademark style.

This strategy has shown some promise, but fans say it puts players at a disadvantage in mixed doubles, where consistent attacking power from the backcourt is often very important. People have noticed that Maya Taguchi is willing to take responsibility, but the overall pressure from the two of them is still not consistent.

Watanabe's strengths are still clear. He is one of the most creative players in mixed doubles because he plays sharp net, has quick reflexes, and can trick his opponents with his shots.

But opponents have been able to handle pressure and turn rallies around without a strong and steady attacking base behind him. In a few recent matches, his opponents have been able to stop his smashes and change the course of the game, leaving him open during transitions.

This imbalance has made it harder for the two of them to stay in charge during long rallies.

Fans think that their current setup may have trouble getting consistent results at the highest level because they don't have enough backcourt pressure, and their roles aren't well distributed.

Fans Divided on the Role of Maya Taguchi and Long-term Potential

Fans have a mix of worry and hope about Taguchi's role in the partnership.

“I have been a big fan of Watanabe and have been following his recent matches closely,” one fan wrote, before pointing out the duo’s “heavy reliance on Taguchi as the backcourt player.”

Another added, “Everyone knows Watanabe is one of the best drop-shot players… but without enough pressure, his drops become less effective.”

Some fans were more critical of Taguchi’s current level. "Honestly, Taguchi is still too weak for top level… In rallies, she’s often focused by other teams and can’t sustain pressure defending,” one comment read.

There were also comparisons with Watanabe’s former partner, Arisa Higashino. “Higashino was quite a powerful partner, so playing with Taguchi requires quite a different play style,” a fan observed.

However, several supporters urged patience. “Taguchi is still 20… she still has a long career ahead of her,” one fan noted, while another added, “This is clearly a work in progress… they see potential.”

Some also pointed out the tactical gap more clearly. “The biggest issue is that Watanabe doesn’t get enough sustained pressure from the backcourt, so his creativity at the net becomes easier to read,” a comment read.

Fans have made it clear for now: there is promise, but the duo's biggest challenge going forward will be finding balance.
