Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping are just one game short of winning the 2026 Australian Open. The duo enjoyed an impressive run in Sydney and defeated Presley Smith and Jennie Gai in the semifinal to secure their place in the final.
After the semifinal on Saturday, they opened up about their win while talking to the media. They were also asked an interesting question about what person or object they would choose to be at the 2026 Australian Open.
Huang Dong Ping said that he would like to be an "umpire/referee."
“I want to be a head of umpire/referee. I want to sit down & watch the entire match," Dong Ping said.
While Zhe chose to be a photographer.
The duo had a lighthearted moment after an intense battle in the semifinals against the US team. It had an amazing start, taking the lead early in the game, 21-16.
But then the US team bounced back with a solid 18-21. It was then followed by the final set of 21-7, which helped the duo seize the win at the Sydney Sports Centre.
The world No. 1s faced Kim Joon Young and Lee Yu Lim in round 32, followed by Loo Bing Kun and Noraqilah Maisarah in round 16. In the quarterfinals, the team played against Akira Koga and Natsu Saito.
Intriguingly, they managed to have easy wins in the first three matches, but against the US duo they needed to play three sets. They are now eyeing the finals.
Who Will Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping Play In The Final?
Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping will be playing against their fellow Chinese duo Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui in the final of the 2026 Australian Open. Guo and Chen had a win over Thailand's Ruttanapak Oupthong and Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat to secure a spot in the final, 21-9, 19-21, and 21-17.
Before coming to the Australian Open, Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping played in the Indonesia Open in Jakarta. After a decent win in the round 32 over Jimmy Wong and Cheng Su Yin, 21-19 and 21-18, and Adnan Maulana and Indah Cahya Sari Jamil, 21-14, 17-21, and 21-18 in the round 16, the team finally secured their spot in the quarterfinals.
But their campaign came to an end after an unfortunate defeat against Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi.
They had a tough time at the Singapore Open, also, where they were eliminated early from the event after a defeat to Jimmy Wong and Cheng Su Yin in round 32. The duo had won the Malaysia Open earlier in the season and again are in contention for a win.
The Australian Open final is scheduled for Sunday, June 14, and it would be interesting to see whether Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping can secure the win.
