PV Sindhu's run at the Singapore Open is over. The Indian star lost in the quarterfinals on Friday. Her opponent was world No. 1 An Se-young of South Korea.

The final score read 21-17, 21-14 in An's favour. It was another tough day at the office for Sindhu in this rivalry. The Korean was just too sharp.

Sindhu did show flashes of her attacking best. She put An under pressure in some phases of the match. But she could not keep that level going for long.

An's control and movement made the difference. She kept winning the crucial points when it mattered most. That has been the story of this rivalry for years now.

The loss extended Sindhu's winless run against An to nine matches. The head-to-head now reads 9-0. It is a record that has only grown more lopsided over time.

In all their meetings, Sindhu has managed to take just one game off An. That was at the 2023 Badminton Asia Championships. Every other match has gone in straight games.

The two first met at the Denmark Open in 2019. Sindhu lost that one 21-14, 21-17. Their most recent meeting before this was at the China Masters, where An won 21-14, 21-13.

Both players will be back in action soon. Sindhu travels to the POLYTRON Indonesia Open 2026, which starts on June 2. She faces Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the opening round.

An Se-young will also play in Indonesia. Her first-round opponent is Turkey's Neslihan Arin, the world No. 29.

PV Sindhu's Performance So Far in 2026

Sindhu has had a steady year on the BWF World Tour. Her 2026 win-loss record stands at 10-7. She has stayed in the mix with the top names in women's singles.

The highlight came at the Indonesia Masters. She crossed 500 career match wins there. That makes her only the sixth women's singles player ever, and the first Indian, to hit that mark.

Her Singapore Open run was a strong one too. She beat world No. 6 Putri Kusuma Wardani in the Round of 32. Then she crushed Japan's Riko Gunji before losing to An.

The Malaysia Open was another big moment. Sindhu came back from a three-month injury layoff. She made her first semifinal in 14 months before losing to China's Wang Zhi Yi.

The Thailand Open also went well. She made the quarterfinals with wins over Tung Ci-Tong and Amalie Schulz. But Akane Yamaguchi stopped her in a tight three-game thriller.

It has not all been smooth though. She had early exits at the India Open and the Badminton Asia Championships. She was also forced to pull out of the All England Open due to travel issues.

Still, Sindhu keeps showing up and fighting. She remains a serious threat in any draw. The big titles may take time, but she is still very much in the conversation.
