A promising independent badminton partnership has come to an end all of a sudden. Mixed doubles team Jimmy Wong and Lai Pei Jing have decided to part ways after just one year together.

The decision comes after Jimmy's contract with sponsor Victor ended, which meant the partnership was over. They last played at the Swiss Open last month, which ended a short but important chapter in their careers.

Despite only becoming partners a year ago, they worked their way up to world No. 23 and made it to seven finals on the BWF Tour. All seven, however, finished with the duo in second place.

Jimmy, 23, confirmed the news in a post on social media, where he thanked his sponsors and everyone who had helped him along the way. He also thanked Pei Jing for helping him get into mixed doubles after his old partner, Tan Kian Meng, quit.

People thought their partnership was one of the most interesting independent groups in Malaysia due to their quick emergence to the top.

What Lies Ahead for Jimmy Wong and Lai Pei Jing

Now the focus is on what will happen next for each player as they go their separate ways.

There is a belief that a return to the national team might be the route for Jimmy now. He was let go in 2022, but since then, he has rebuilt his reputation by doing well on the independent circuit. His recent results might help his case for a recall.

Meanwhile, Pei Jing will have to find a new partner soon. She is still one of Malaysia's most experienced mixed doubles players at 33 and is still a valuable player on tour.

The split also happens at the same time as other changes in Malaysia's doubles scene. After ten years together, men's doubles team Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi have also split up. This shows that the country's independent circuit is going through a time of change.
