Aaron Chia Highlights 3 Key Pairs Boosting Malaysia’s Thomas Cup Preparations

As Malaysia enters the final stage of preparation for the 2026 Thomas Cup in Herning, Denmark, with all its players getting ready to be in their best forms, the country continues to pursue the crown since 1992.
Malaysia added three extra men's doubles pairs to its 2026 Thomas Cup training squad. Star Aaron Chia highlighted how these sparring partners add value before the tournament begins in Herning, Denmark. The team aims to end a championship drought dating back to 1992.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia recruited three doubles pairs to train with the main team: Wan Arif Wan Junaidi and Yap Roy King, Aaron Tai and Khai Xing, and Choong Hon Jian and Goh Boon Zhe. And the same players are expected to help the women’s team prepare for the Uber Cup.
Aaron Chia, the men’s doubles star of Malaysia, explains this move and why it’s so important in the final days before the tournament.
“I think sparring partners are important because we brought them not only to help the Thomas Cup squad, but also to assist the Uber Cup team. They add value in our preparation as a team during these eight days before the Thomas Cup. That is what I hope for,” he said.
As Malaysia is placed in Group B along with Japan, England, and Finland, with the two top teams moving into the quarter-final, Aaron mentions that they'd rather focus on their own stance than the draw.
“It’s fine. The important thing is to do our best, and whoever is given the chance to step on court must give their all.”
Why These Pairs Could Help Malaysia
With new opponents in training, instead of playing with the same combinations every day, the players get a chance to experience new styles and proper match-like sessions with different strengths.
With Wan Arif and Yap Roy King already having experience with the national setup and having played in top-level team events, Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing, too, are very skilled regardless of their age and experience, as they previously won the 2024 World Junior boys’ title before moving on to the senior ranks.
Choong Hon Jian and Goh Boon Zhe are also one of the pairs who are reliable enough to provide enough competition in the training. Malaysia continues to depend on Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, along with Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin, regardless.
The Thomas Cup continues to be one of the most prestigious trophies in Badminton and an important milestone in Malaysia’s history in the sport. The nation last won the cup in 1992, and every tournament since then has been a hope of ending that long wait. Maybe this new step in their preparation can make a difference.
